Understanding Your Heart’s Electrical System
At St. Luke’s Heart & Vascular Institute, we specialize in advanced procedures to study and treat your heart’s electrical function. Our doctors, nurses and technologists will guide you through your diagnosis and treatment options.
How We Diagnose Arrhythmias
Our electrophysiologists use advanced techniques to locate the sites within the heart that cause arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common type of irregular heartbeat we see.
If we find that you have an arrhythmia, we offer a number of treatment options, including:
- Radiofrequency ablation (a procedure that destroys abnormal tissue that causes irregular heart rhythms)
- Pulsed-field ablation (PFA, an ablation procedure that uses electrical fields)
- Pacemaker implantation (which helps regulate slow heartbeats)
- Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation (a device that corrects your fast heart rhythms)

What Is Electrophysiology?
Electrophysiology focuses on the electrical activity and pathways of your heart. If you experience symptoms such as a slow, fast or irregular heartbeat, it could be linked to an arrhythmia. Our electrophysiologists (doctors who specialize in heart rhythm disorders) work with a highly trained team to diagnose and treat these conditions.
