Vascular Surgery

Minimally Invasive, Traditional and Cosmetic Surgical Options for Blood Vessels

Vascular surgery is an option for treating many conditions of the blood vessels, including the arteries and veins. Many of these conditions can be serious or even life-threatening without expert care.

The St. Luke’s team offers advanced treatment options for vascular conditions. Healthgrades® has named us one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Vascular Surgery™. We see hundreds of patients each year for some of the most complex and challenging vascular problems. And we’ll provide the complete, compassionate care you deserve every step of the way.

Conditions We Treat With Vascular Surgery

Our vascular surgery techniques are an effective treatment option for many conditions that affect the arteries and veins. These conditions include:

  • Aortic aneurysms (a weakened or bulging section of the wall of the aorta, the body’s largest artery), including abdominal aneurysms
  • Aortic dissections (ruptures in the aorta)
  • Blood clots (clots in the arteries that can increase your risk of stroke, heart attack, trouble walking or the loss of a limb)
  • Carotid artery disease (a blockage or narrowing in the arteries that bring blood to the brain, which can lead to a stroke)
  • Peripheral artery disease (a buildup of plaque, a combination of fat and cholesterol deposits, in the blood vessels outside the heart)
  • Venous disease (damage to the valves in the veins that allow blood to flow through in the proper direction)

Types of Vascular Surgery We Offer

Our vascular surgeons provide the full range of surgical options for vascular diseases and conditions. These surgical options include:

In endovascular surgery, our surgeons use small incisions to access the arteries or veins, rather than open surgery. These techniques involve less blood loss and usually result in faster recoveries.

Some of the many endovascular surgeries our team offers include:

  • Angioplasty (a procedure in which we insert a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into a blocked or narrowed blood vessel, then inflate a special balloon to open the blood vessel back up)
  • Atherectomy (a procedure in which we insert a catheter with a special cutting blade into a blocked blood vessel to remove plaque)
  • Embolization (a procedure to place small beads or sponges into a blood vessel to block it off, which we can use to treat aneurysms or other sites of abnormal bleeding, as well as to block blood flow into a tumor)
  • Stent placement (a procedure in which we insert a catheter into a blood vessel and place a small mesh tube called a stent, which will hold the blood vessel open and keep it from narrowing again)
  • TCAR (transcarotid artery revascularization)
  • Thrombectomy (also known as clot removal, a minimally invasive procedure to remove a blood clot from a blood vessel)

If you are not a candidate for minimally invasive vascular surgery, our team offers a full range of traditional open vascular procedures. These include:

  • Aneurysm surgery (a procedure that involves making an incision in the chest or belly to remove the aneurysm and replacing it with a fabric tube called a graft, which will allow blood to flow normally)
  • Peripheral artery bypass surgery (a procedure to create a new path for blood around a blocked blood vessel by using a healthy blood vessel from elsewhere in the body or an artificial vessel)
  • Carotid endarterectomy (a procedure in which your surgeon will make an incision in the neck at the site of a blockage in your carotid artery, which supplies blood to the brain, to remove the blockage and prevent it from happening again)
  • Vein ligation and stripping (a procedure to treat severe varicose veins by locating veins in your legs that are not properly draining blood, tying them off and removing them)

Small varicose or spider veins (swollen or twisted veins that often look like a spiderweb) appear most often on the legs. These can develop due to problems with the valves that keep blood moving in the right direction away from the limbs and back toward the heart.

We offer several cosmetic procedures to treat varicose and spider veins. In sclerotherapy, your doctor will inject a medication into the vein. This causes it to stick together and close off, which can reduce swelling and cause it to shrink. Your doctor may recommend several sclerotherapy treatments for you to see the best results.

We also offer laser treatments for small varicose and spider veins. External laser treatments can cause the treated vein to clot and dry up. In endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), your doctor will make a small incision in the vein and insert a laser fiber, which causes it to collapse.
