Jason Edwards, MD, PhD
Center for Cancer Care's Radiation Oncology
Dr. Edwards earned his PhD in Cellular and Integrative Physiology at Indiana University. He then received his medical degree at the University of Missouri and completed his surgical internship and radiation oncology residency at the University of Kentucky's Chandler Medical Center.
Dr. Edwards expertise is focused on integrating sophisticated technology into successful treatments for cancer patients. He is trained and has special interest in high dose rate (HDR) and low dose rate (LDR) GYN brachytherapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
Dr. Edwards has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, is a co-author of multiple chapters in various oncology texts, has secured funding for a prospective trial for the treatment of patients with oligometastasis and has been invited to give numerous lectures and presentations at professional meetings in the United States.
The utilization of radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer can be both palliative and curative. It can also be used alone or in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy.
At St. Luke’s Hospital, we treat and cure cancers such as prostate, breast, lung, head and neck, anal/rectal, lymphomas, sarcomas and skin cancers using standard radiation and IMRT techniques that are administered typically over a 3 to 6-week period of time, as specified by NCCN Guidelines.
We also treat and cure early stage lung and brain cancers with a technique called Stereotactic Radiation Therapy, consisting of 3 to 5 treatments.
Lastly, in the treatment of thyroid cancer, a very common cancer, we use a radioactive iodine capsule following the surgical removal of the thyroid gland.
It is the goal of our staff to be available to patients prior to, during and after they have received their treatment to assure they do not have questions or concerns that may make their journey through their cancer treatments stressful.
