Ultrasound

What is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic test using high frequency sound waves to create a picture of internal organs. Ultrasound is done to evaluate organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, thyroid, testicles, uterus and ovaries.

How to Prepare for Your Ultrasound

If you are scheduled for an ultrasound of the pelvis or for obstetrical purposes you should drink approximately three to four glasses of water one hour prior to your scheduled appointment. Do not void prior to the examination.

If you are scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound, you should not eat or drink 8 hours prior to your scheduled exam.

You will be asked to lie on a stretcher for the exam. The sonographer will apply a gel to the skin and a hand held ultrasound transducer will be moved across the body part to be examined.
