IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram)

What is Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)?

An Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) is an exam utilizing contrast (dye) to visualize the kidneys, ureters and bladder. IVPs are most commonly performed for analysis of renal or ureteral stones, chronic infection and hypertension and to exclude the possibility of tumor.

What to Expect During an IVP

You need to pick up a bowel prep kit from your local pharmacy at least 18 hours before your scheduled exam time.

The procedure is performed by injecting a variable amount of contrast (dye) into a vein. This material is excreted by the kidneys into the ureter and to the bladder. This substance will permit the radiologist to visualize the above-mentioned organs on x-ray film.
