Wound Care Center
Comprehensive Wound Care
The Wound Care Center and Hyperbaric Medicine at St. Luke's Hospital has been providing comprehensive services in St. Louis since 1973. We evaluate wounds from a whole body point of view.
A wound is considered to be any breakdown in the protective function of the skin, and can be caused by any number of different things. Cuts, abrasions, surgical incisions, pressure and even radiation, can cause wounds.
A chronic wound, is defined as a wound that does not heal in an orderly set of stages and in a predictable amount of time the way most wounds do; wounds that do not heal within three months are considered chronic.
Medical Management
The Wound Care Center and Hyperbaric Medicine offers state-of-the-art medical management of chronic non-healing wounds caused by diabetes and pressure, arterial and venous insufficiency, as well as complicated non-healing surgical wounds. The Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center was the first facility in the St. Louis region to utilize hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of chronic wounds. Newer, cutting edge technologies, such as recombinant human growth factors and bioengineered tissue substitutes, provides a full range of medical treatment modalities.
We provide a thorough diagnostic appraisal of the wound and the patient, followed by a carefully designed case management program. We will formulate a treatment program based on your needs. This program will include regular visits to provide treatment, evaluate progress and make any changes that might be needed. You will be given detailed instructions in home care, dressing (bandage) changes and protecting the wound from further injury.
Wound Treatment
Our standard of care offers individualized and advanced wound care treatments to treat your wound.
Providing Further Care
The Wound Care Center evaluates not just the wound itself, but other medical and physical conditions in the body which make healing of the wound more difficult. When needed, referrals are made to general, vascular and plastic surgeons, infectious disease physicians, certified orthotists, physical therapists, home care, dietitians and the Social Services Department.
I am grateful for the excellent care I received at St. Luke's Wound Care Center.
