Partial Knee Replacement

Advancing Knee Care

If you are a candidate, your doctor may have recommended partial knee replacement surgery. Partial knee replacement is an option if only a part of your knee has damaged cartilage. This kind of knee surgery replaces damaged cartilage and bone in one section of the knee joint with an implant. This is an alternative to total knee replacement, which replaces the entire joint.

During a partial knee replacement, your surgeon can leave the healthy sections of the knee alone. This can make your recovery faster and easier. Some patients also say a partial knee replacement feels more natural than a total knee replacement because we can preserve more of the natural knee. Your partial knee replacement may require additional follow-up if other parts of your knee develop arthritis.

Warning Signs for a Partial Knee Replacement

If you notice any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor about your options for partial or total knee replacement:

  • Arthritis-induced knee pain that you can’t control with pain medication
  • Knee fractures
  • Knee pain that keeps you awake at night
  • Knee pain that keeps you from working or playing comfortably
  • Not being able to walk or run more than a few blocks without pain
