Hyperbaric oxygen is used to treat a wide variety of clinical problems such as carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression illness (the "bends") and chronic hypoxic non-healing wounds. Recent evidence suggests that this form of treatment may be useful in treating patients with small vessel disease of the brain as exhibited by white matter hyperintensities noted on CT scan or MRl.
St. Luke's Hospital and Washington University are sponsoring a study on the benefit of hyperbaric oxygen for patients with small vessel disease of the brain.
Patients who have experienced a mini-stroke or TIA; have abnormalities on neurological exams; or have exhibited other symptoms commonly diagnosed through CT scan or MRl may be eligible to participate.
This study includes 17 components at no cost:
- Initial interview
- Three MRls
- 10 hyperbaric treatments
- Three neurological examinations
