What is Mitral Regurgitation?
Mitral regurgitation or a "leaking mitral valve" occurs when the valve does not completely close properly. This causes a portion of the blood that the heart pumps to be pushed back into the back chamber of the heart and into the lungs. As a result, the heart does not work as efficiently as it should and can lead to dilation of the heart pumping chamber and fluid buildup in the lungs. Patients with this issue can have symptoms of shortness of breath, trouble lying flat to sleep, fatigue and lightheadedness. Many patients may also adapt their lifestyle and activities so that their valve disease may go undetected and occur without obvious symptoms.
