St. Luke's Hospital Achieves Top Rankings in National Hospital Quality Study

The Healthgrades study ranks St. Luke's among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for overall cardiac services, overall pulmonary services and neurosurgery.

Chesterfield, Mo., October 22, 2013 - St. Luke's Hospital ranks among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for overall cardiac services (2013-2014), overall pulmonary services (2003-2014) and neurosurgery (2012-2014) according to a study published today by Healthgrades, a leading online resource that helps consumers search for, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals.

Earlier this year, St. Luke's was also recognized for the seventh year in a row (2007-2013) as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, ranking St. Luke's among the top one percent of hospitals in the nation based on survival and complication rates. St. Luke's is the only hospital in St. Louis to achieve this quality designation since the inception of the list.

"These national recognitions for overall clinical quality and specialty area performance can be attributed to the efforts of our dedicated team of healthcare providers who are committed to providing the best care possible for each patient," said Gary Olson, St. Luke's Hospital president and chief executive officer. "This is one of the many ways we live our mission to improve the quality of life for our patients and the community."

The new quality ratings are included in American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2014: Healthgrades Report to the Nation , which evaluates quality performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 31 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records from 2010 through 2012. Hospitals cannot opt out of the analysis, and no hospital pays to be rated. Healthgrades risk-adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thus taking into account how sick patients were before admission to the hospital.
