Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings Overview
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), along with key stakeholders, developed methodology to calculate and display overall hospital-level quality using a star rating system.
The overarching goal of the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating (Overall Star Rating) is to improve the usability and interpretability of information posted on Care Compare, a website designed for consumers to use along with their healthcare provider to make decisions on where to receive care. CMS developed this methodology with the input of a broad array of stakeholders to summarize results of many measures currently publicly reported. The Overall Star Rating provides consumers with an overall rating generated by combining multiple dimensions of quality into a single summary score.
CMS is committed to supporting hospitals throughout implementation and encourages hospitals to review their results and to ask questions.
For each hospital, a hospital summary score is calculated by taking the weighted average of the hospital’s scores for each measure group.
