Helping a Loved One
Supporting your loved one on the road to wellness.
Your support can help your friend or family on the road to wellness. There are many things you can do that will help a patient before, during and after a hospital stay. Here are just a few:
Prepare a checklist for the hospital stay. If you know in advance about the hospital stay, work with your loved one to ensure that everything they need is packed for the stay.
Find directions and plan a route to arrive at the hospital on time or early.
Bring small items that will help to personalize the hospital room, such as photographs or children's artwork. These items can help to lift spirits and reduce feelings of isolation.
Create a list of approved visitors. This can help your loved one focus on recovery without feeling overwhelmed or caught off guard.
Meet the care team. Learn the names of those who are caring for your loved one and keep open communication to stay current with developments.
Develop a discharge plan. Figure out details such as who will take them home after surgery and what special help will be needed during recovery.
