St. Luke's Hospital Recognized in National Hospital Quality Study

The Healthgrades study identifies St. Luke's among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide in multiple specialties.

Chesterfield, Mo., October 21, 2014 - St. Luke's Hospital is among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for cardiology services (2012-2015), pulmonary services (2003-2015), neurosurgery (2012-2015) and gastrointestinal medical treatment (2010-2015), according to a hospital quality study published today by Healthgrades, an independent healthcare ratings organization.

Earlier this year, St. Luke's was also recognized for the eighth year in a row (2007-2014) as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, ranking St. Luke's among the top 1 percent of hospitals in the nation based on overall survival and complication rates. St. Luke's is the only hospital in St. Louis to achieve this quality designation since the inception of the list.

"Improving the quality of life in our community starts with the care we provide every patient each day," said Gary Olson, St. Luke's Hospital president and chief executive officer. "These national recognitions reflect the daily commitment St. Luke's healthcare team makes to provide high quality care."

The Healthgrades 2015 Report to the Nation includes an analysis of healthcare quality at over 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records from 2011 through 2013 for the study. Hospitals cannot opt out of the analysis, and no hospital pays to be rated. Healthgrades risk-adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thus taking into account how sick patients were before admission to the hospital.

"The Healthgrades analysis shows that not all hospitals perform equally in all procedures, so it is important that consumers do their homework when selecting a hospital," said Evan Marks, Healthgrades chief strategy officer. "Those hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades distinction have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional clinical care."

St. Luke's achieved additional Healthgrades honors earlier this year including the Outstanding Patient Experience Award (2011-2014) and the Women's Health Excellence Award (2009-2014). For more information, visit healthgrades.com .
