National Hospital Quality Study Ranks St. Luke's Hospital Best in St. Louis for Cardiac Care

The independent study also finds St. Luke's number one in Missouri for neurosurgery, neurosciences, overall pulmonary services, critical care and gastrointestinal medical treatment.

Chesterfield, Mo., October 23, 2012 - St. Luke's Hospital ranks as the best in St. Louis for overall cardiac services and cardiac surgery according to a study published today by Healthgrades, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization. The study also names St. Luke's number one in Missouri for neurosurgery, neurosciences (neurosurgery and stroke treatment combined), overall pulmonary services, critical care and gastrointestinal medical treatment.

Earlier this year, St. Luke's was also recognized for the sixth year in a row as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, ranking St. Luke's among the top one percent of hospitals in the nation based solely on survival and complication rates. St. Luke's is the only hospital in Missouri to receive this quality designation since the inception of the list.

"Providing quality patient care is paramount in fulfilling our mission to improve the quality of life for our patients and the community," said Gary Olson, St. Luke's Hospital president and chief executive officer. "This national recognition is the result of our healthcare team's dedication to providing the highest quality of care to each patient every day."

The new quality ratings are included in American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation , which evaluates the performance of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide across nearly 30 of the most common conditions and procedures. The analysis is based on Medicare records from 2009 through 2011. Hospitals cannot opt out of the analysis, and no hospital pays to be rated. Healthgrades risk-adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thus taking into account how sick patients were before admission to the hospital.
