St. Luke's Hospital is proud to honor Dr. Robert Paine, founder of the Department of Cardiology at St. Luke's Hospital. For more than 40 years, Dr. Paine's profound influence on promoting excellence in the areas of cardiac education, research, technology and treatment options has led to extraordinary medical advances that have helped shape new and innovative models of patient care in the St. Louis region.
Dr. Paine graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1944. He completed an internship, residency and a Rockefeller Fellowship in Cardiology at Washington University School of Medicine. In 1951, Dr. Paine joined the medical staff of St. Luke's. Over the next 35 years he led an unprecedented period of growth in the field of cardiology.
Recognizing the importance of medical education and teaching, Dr. Paine's vision led to numerous collaborations with Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Paine received many awards by medical students, including the prestigious Sydney S. Pearl, MD'32 Award for Inspirational Teaching.
In Addition,
- From the 1960's through 1980's, Dr. Paine designed and directed the first cardiology elective for seniors at Washington University Medical School.
- Dr. Paine championed the advancement of patient care by establishing a fellowship program for advanced heart disease training.
- Dr. Paine is credited with building the quality of the physician-patient relationship. In 1988, Dr. Paine started a course for medical students at Washington University entitled, "The Physician as Health Protector and Patient Advocate."
