Visitors
St. Luke's Family-Centered Maternity Care focuses care around the mother, father and baby, as well as involving siblings and grandparents during this happy time. In order to provide maximum family time, we offer open visiting hours. The new mother determines the visiting hours for friends and family members. Children are welcome to visit, but must be accompanied at all times by an adult.
Before holding the new baby, family members and any other visitors should thoroughly wash their hands. All visitors should be free of colds or infections.
For the well-being of both mother and baby, St. Luke's is a smoke-free environment and visitors may not smoke in the hospital.
Safety and Security
All newborns are cared for in a safe and secure environment. Mother and baby are given special security IDs during their stay. Access to the Well Baby and Special Care Nurseries is limited.
Newborn Screenings
Babies born at St. Luke's Hospital are screened for a variety of conditions, as required by the state of Missouri, including phenylketonuria (PKU), galactosemia, thyroid disease, sickle cell disease and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. In addition, all babies have their hearing tested using the latest technology. The hearing screening is non-invasive and painless.
Breastfeeding Support
Breastfeeding provides your baby with a strong nutritional start and helps with emotional development. Breast milk is an easily digested, perfectly matched nutrition source filled with antibodies that protect against infection. Breastfeeding also promotes bonding and contributes to a special, loving relationship with your newborn.
Through our onsite Lactation Center, St. Luke's offers a wealth of resources and support for mothers who choose to breastfeed. The Center is staffed by certified lactation consultants. They are available to provide one-on-one care, instruction and support for mothers during their hospital stay. Our lactation specialists at St. Luke's are so well respected that patients from other hospitals often seek their care and support.
Conveniently located within the Birth Care Suites, the Lactation Center also offers a variety of services and products, including nursing bras, breast shields and breast pumps, for before and after childbirth.

Something Special for Mom - Massage
Take advantage of this opportunity to pamper yourself. (Or grandparents or dad may want to treat the new mom with this special gift.) Therapists provide massages in the comfort and privacy of your room. St. Luke's Massage Therapy Services are available by appointment in increments of 15, 30 or 60 minutes at the cost of $1 per minute for:
- Seated chair massage
- Hand/foot massage
- Prenatal massage
Massage gift certificates also can be purchased as a gift for the new mom, to be redeemed at another time. Grandparents and new dads: surprise her with an indulgent hour out of the house during those busy (and sleepless) first weeks. We are happy to mail gift certificates to the purchaser or the gift recipient. For more information, to schedule an appointment, or to purchase a gift certificate by phone, call 314-205-6185.
Car Seat for Baby
Another thing you will want to be sure to buy before baby is born is a car seat. You will need a car seat to bring your baby home from the hospital. Be sure to bring your infant's car seat to the hospital when it is time to take baby home.
